LotR - my story
My interest in Tolkien's work first started when I was about five years old and my dad read The Hobbit to me. I loved it straight away, and read twice before i was ten. When I was ten, I was reading it again. My dad suggested to me that I read Lord of the Rings, saying it was alot like The Hobbit so I'd probably enjoy it.
So after I finished with The Hobbit, my dad got his very old copy of LotR from the attic. I was a little intimidated by the size, but decided I'd give it a go. I loved it. The first few pages I read I put a little mark on my bedroom wall (long story) because it was such a big event, but eventually I was unable to do that.
I think I was about half way through The Two Towers when I first heard of the film. Iwas sitting in the living room of my dad's house, reading it as usual, when an advert came on for The Fellowship of the Rings movie. I was amazed: there was a LotR film and I'd only just found out!! It took me just less than a month to read LotR the first time; I finished it the day before Fellowship came out in cinemas, I went to see it that day. Apart from the odd changes and omissions *cough*Arwen*cough*Tom Bombadil*cough it was the greatest film I'd ever seen. I saw it two more times in the cinema.
My family was amazed when I didn't get FotR on video or DVD when it came out. Truth be known, I still liked it a bit, but didn't want to be considered weird by my friends who thought it was boring.
When Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets film came out in the cinema, my mum promised that if I went to see it with her (I hate HP) she'd take me to see The Two Towers. But she didn't. And to this day I have never seen TTT film in the cinema *sob*.
I started being friends with someone else who liked it, and I got into the whole LotR thing again. I got TTT film the day it came out on DVD along with Fellowship, and loved it again.
I read LotR again before RotK came out (it took me ten days which I was proud of)and then I saw the film. It was the most amazing thing I'd ever seen. OK, I have to admit, I didn't live up to the expectations I got from the book, but it was still the greatest film ever. It was around about now that I became really obsessed. I read The Hobbit again after RotK film, then I read LotR. After reading Tolkien biography, I bought The Silmarillion and finished it within a week (I was proud of this because for some people it can take up to a year!> I thought The Sil was even better than LotR.
Now my bedroom is filled with LotR posters and framed pictures, cards and film memoribilia, the EEs and theatricals of all three films, three copies of the book, two copies of The Hobbit, one copy of The Silmarillion (I plan to get more), a Tolkien encyclopedia and A Guide to Tolkien, a Sting sword, Bilbo's red book, an Eowyn white wool dress (A little rubbish but at least I've got it), I wear an Evenstar and a Nenya, and I have an Elven headdress. I think it's right to say I am officially obsessed with Tolkien's world, and I am proud of it :-).
More Info on Me:
The bad thing about me is that I have an illness called chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) or, as it is more commonly known, ME (myalgic enchetholopathy or something like that.) It first began when I started in my first year of high school (year 7) when i was off school quite often. Halfway into the second term and it was getting out of hand. My mum thought I was faking I think, but eventually (after lots of tests: heart X-rays, blood tests etc.)I was diagnosed with CFS. I was so releived that they finally knew what was wrong. They said the average amount of time with it is three years but some people have had it for ten! I'm now in year 9 at school and I have been diagnosed with it for over 18 months. Unfortunately I have shown no signs of improvement. I constantly feel sick (I have tablets to stop the nausea) and get exhausted extrememly easily. I need to be carried or crawl around the house, and have a wheelchair for distances for any longer than the garden path.
